Evaluation - Question 7

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Below is a video of Alicia who described what we have learnt from the preliminary task to our final
product.

Alicia was not in my preliminary task, however the things Alicia said related to myself as well.
I believe, personally i have learnt to edit on premiere much better than i could during the prelim task, this is just due to the practice i have had.  Not only this, but i think that i overall have become a more dedicated, hard working media student.  This is because with the prelim task we had to get a lot of tasks due in a short period of time, therefore i would constantly be working on media to the best of my ability.  This has taught me that i do need to keep on top of my work and that it shows that hard work will eventually pay off.  Another thing i have learnt from the prelim is a number of different camera shots, angles, frames and tiny specific details which represent and symbolize many different things.  This has taught me to next time really think about my shots in a deeper meaning as other people will analyse my shots from my short films and they will then be able to relate to the message i will initially be trying to spread.  With the final product, I have learnt that planning a short film like our film opening has to have a lot of time spent on it and thoroughly thought through.  This has become evident to me as when we were filming the film opening we needed all of our storyboard notes in full detail include the type of shot and the timing of the shot, the setting, lighting and many more details that we all needed on set.  This is because media is a time consuming subject especially when it comes to filming, therefore everything needs to be planned and completed before filming as this will make us more organised and the filming will be done quicker but not rushed.

Evaluation - Question 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?
Below is a powtoon of who the audience are in our media product.

Evaluation - Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

The research we done to find the right institution we found not that difficult, we knew that we wanted to use a UK based production company as we thought that would be the way to hit our target audience. We did look at the other ones such as universal and Lionsgate but we thought they would be to spread across the world and we didn't think our film would be big enough to begin with. So we went with a UK based company and we ended up using film 4 as our production company.

The production company we chose was film 4, the reason we chose them is because they are a well-known company. The reason the choice of Production Company is important is because it determines what kind of audience the film will branch out to. Film 4 is mainly a UK based company which means that our film would be mainly a UK attraction, it would be hard for it to reach an international audience such as in America. However, if the film did do well in the UK and became a big hit, it could then spread through to the international film scene. For the best means of distributing your product, I think to earn the most money we would need to put it in cinema, but as its only a small film it would probably been shown on TV, on the film 4 channel and from then it will try to produce as much money as possible.

The research sources that we used were:
www.imdb.com

The logo we used was the film 4 logo and then we created one of our own for our own production company. The one we created was the following

CETA Productions is the other production company that we have created on our own. It will be a small UK production company that will focus on trying to make it big in the UK. It will be similar to film 4 in the fact that it will play mainly UK based films and will hopefully be a large institution in the future. If it is successful in the UK it could branch out and start playing international films and try and produce some of the other international films.

Evaluation - Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Below is a press presentation of the social groups involved in our film opening.

Evaluation - Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

After sitting down with the group for the first time we decided to go for a Drama and Romance film. After we looked at the conventions of a Drama genre film opening we found they included:

  • Exhibits real life situations with realistic characters, settings and stories.
  • Intense social interaction.
  • Audience can relate to the characters.
  • Structured with climax and anti- climax's to keep the audience attached.
  • Intense social interaction.
(And many more)

So we created a film opening idea that had the conventions of a Drama film opening and used them in a way that fitted our narrative. In our film opening, I feel that is displays the five shown above which are some of the key conventions, this led us to believe and people we showed our film opening to, that the conventions show a clear Drama based genre. Some viewers did suggest that it could also be a Romance and I will discuss this later. Some conventions involve the two main characters that we see throughout the film opening have an intense social interaction which is also emphasised by the non-diegetic music. Like the setting we wanted the audience to relate to the the characters as it demonstrates their everyday life or routine. We showed this evidently as Commute is solely based on the parallel lives of people in society. The ending of our film opening is stereotypical to the Drama genre as it ends on the two protagonists meeting each other at last so the viewer wants to carry on watching and see what happens next.

Our other genre was Romance. Just like Titanic which is also a Drama and Romance film, the two protagonists meet each other to finally fall in love. Likewise to our film opening it had two people that meet each other and the story goes on. Although, it is clear to see the difference between the Titanic conventions of love compared to Commute. This doesn't mean that our opening hasn't got conventions of Romance in. We didn't want to make the narrative that easy to predict as we tried to be as original as possible, so we included the use of non-diegetic music which we felt had a feeling of warmth attached to it. This was to show a small part of Romantic conventions to our opening. Again films like Titanic heavily express the love/romance between characters by the of non-diegetic music.

Title of the film/Font:

The title of the film is based on the whole idea of the film: commuting. The idea that Alicia is on her everyday journey to work while Tez's commute becomes an enigma. As a group we felt that commuting to work is a very relate-able part of life and our title voices the basis of our film and its opening. After researching into fonts and titles before hand we based our font on the simplicity but bold. The likes of the 7:39 and The Boy Next Door both have simple but bold fonts so we decided to choose a font that looks similar and this was our final result:

Setting/Location:

All our filming happened in Chelmsford which is an urban city and was perfect to fit the narrative of our film and opening. The movie is based upon the urban city environment where the train station lays (the main setting of the film). The setting being in Chelmsford is to show that although the main two characters are completely different, that they're are mixed social figures in society wherever you go (which is represented in different ways to the viewer). Inspiration was from 'The 7:39' where the two main characters meet each other and the story unfolds. The main location was also a train station. Again, like the title, the location is relate-able. The location/setting of our film opening develops codes and conventions of Romantic/ Drama genre based films, but also uses similar based films locations. An example of this is 'Brooklyn' that is both a Romance and Drama; the films setting and filming are in New York City which is an urban city.

Costumes:

The symbolic codes allow us to recognize the type of characters we are introduced to. Tez's clothing allows the audience to create an image that he is a young thug. The use of the dark clothing with the hood up portrayed this perfectly. Alicia's clothing was smart and sophisticated, and was done to show the type of women we are trying to display and represent. She was based as a stereotypical London worker and I feel that the symbolic codes make this easy to identify. Although, Tez's use of thuggish clothing challenges codes as it going against how society thinks should dress. This develops the understanding of the viewer to understand that he is against societies outlook on life and is later proven by his actions.

Alicia

Tez

How are the characters introduced?

In our film opening, Tez is introduced straight away which can imply to the audience that he is the protagonist. Although, shortly after Alicia is also introduced. It repetitively switches from one character to the other, each time learning more about both. From this the audience know that although Tez was the first person shown we can infer that they are both equally the two protagonists. While editing it was important to get the order of shots right to show the two characters equally. Our group felt the constant switching of the two not only shows their parallel lives but gives confidence to the audience that they are the two main characters.

Camera work and Editing:

The editing software we used was Adobe Premiere. This is a programme that is a timeline-based video editing software that allowed us to put all of our shots together and organise them. It was key when using the non-dietetic music and Foley clips, as it was easy to insert them to the Audio section. Furthermore, premiere was also really effective because it allowed us to apply fades to the audio and titles. An example is every title we had both included the fade in and out effect to keep the pace of the title similar to the shot. When Tez has his earphones in we created a scene that we felt was really effective by using non-diegetic music so you are listening to the same music. After, we used foley when Tez took out his earphones although you could still hear it slightly. This expressed the genre as conventions of drama include connections to the characters, denoting that the audience in this scene could actually feel like they are there with him. We used several type of editing skills throughout to emphasize representation of characters as well as setting/location. Here are some of the camera shots we used in our opening:

- Close Up
-Mid-Shot
- Low- angle shot
- Tracking shot
 - Medium Close Up
- Long Shot

As a group we decided to use several shots as apart of showing location and setting. This was extremely effective when we used long-shots. An example was when Tez was walking under the bridge and it showed the urban city environment. Moreover, we also used different range of shots to show facial emotions in which they expressed what the character was feeling or how they represent themselves in society. This could also be applied with the likes of Mid Shots that showed what the character is wearing.
